Spring Time in the Library/Media Center March, April May

March

Dr. Seuss Week is a great way to start the month. We know you love the games and puzzles. Mrs. Bond and I want to compliment you on your behavior. You were very kind to take turns and not be discouraged when not everyone won a prize at the games. We got all the way to Springfield, Massachusetts (birthplace of Dr. Seuss) by using one mile per book check out. Our special guests from Sprayberry High School arrived again this year. They make great readers, don't they? Did you know that some of them went to school here at Kincaid?  And they go to special workshops at their school to make their tall red and white hats with red bow ties. They even practice reading out loud because you know how Dr. Seuss books get your tongue tangled.

We've just concluded a fabulous Book Fair. Thanks to our PTA and volunteers for all the hard work you put into it.  We hope to thank you at our Volunteer Tea in April. Special thanks to  Maggie Lohner, Joanie Windley and Cinda O'Keefe. Because of all the efforts put forth we added over 100 books to our collection. Mrs. Bond was busy getting them ready for check out and they disappeared in a hurry. Thank you boys and girls for your suggestions of favorite books. It looks like we have many of the titles you suggested.

April

Yeah! Spring Break! We know you are looking forward to some time off but not before the Volunteer Tea when we have a chance to thank all of the people who make such a difference in our school. Without our Library/Media Center helpers we would not be able to accomplish all the things we do. We know your children enjoy seeing you here and what you do helps every child. Thank you so much.

Celebration of the Arts Day is always a welcome treat around Kincaid. It is wonderful to be able to circulate through all the rooms and visit the artists. What a great send off for Spring Break.

May

It is hard to believe this year is coming to an end. Soon story times will be over for the year and check outs will be done. We will have a contest this year to see what class in K - 2  and 3 - 5 will be able to get all their books in first. There will be one prize for primary an one for Intermediate.Teachers and staff we will have the same contest for you. Now is a good time to pay for any lost or damaged materials. A complete list of what is due when and a time line for the end of the year is in your e mail. But here is a quick reminder.

May 1st is the last day for student check outs

May 8th all student books are due and we will have the last story time.

May 15th all teacher and staff materials are due.

Did you know libraries are like gardens? They need to be weeded too. Mrs. Bond and I are working hard to get older books replaced and off the shelves before we begin inventory. We promise to put them out for teachers to look over for possible use in their classrooms.

Now don't you forget to read, read, read this summer. Try the public library summer reading program or the one PTA does at Kincaid. Have a safe and happy summer.

Did you know.............

We had 35,923 circulations as of 4/2/2009.

We added 969 books this year as of 4/2/2009.

We have weeded 4,324 books since 1996.

November and December

There is only one more week until Thanksgiving holidays. Mrs. Bond and I want you all to have a safe and happy  Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday break. Be sure that you keep reading.

Book Fair has come and gone. We loved seeing all the decorations and the magic that happened overnight. Without the many helping hands we know it would not be possible. Many thanks to all the volunteers who gave their time and talents. Special thanks go to Maggie Loehner and Joanie Windley who were the committee chairs for this event. Because the Book Fair did so well we were able to get many of the titles for our library. Mrs. Bond worked hard to get them ready for you to check out. They are ready and waiting on the New Book book cart. Just one to a customer please so everybody can have a chance to see the new books.

We are talking and reading about Caldectt and Newberry Award winning books. Mrs. Bond pulled every title we had in our collection and now we have a new special collection of them. Look for them in the Everybody section under the windows.

When you come back in January we will be looking at Cobb Virtual Library and seeing what we can find in all the reference sources there. This will be a big help when the older grades begin their research units. If you want to take a sneak peek at them over the holidays go to:CVL.cobbk12.org. You will need passwords for home use. They are:CVL Username: cobbes,CVL password: tree and Gallileo password: fallback. I can't wait to get together and see what you found.

October

It's here! BOOK FAIR SAFARI It is full of lions and tigers and books, oh my! We were all amazed at how fast it appeared. Thanks to Maggie Lohner, Joanie Windley and all the helping hands who made it possible. Classes are previewing this week and buying begins next week.

Fall into Good Reading

Welcome back to the Library/Media Center at Kincaid. Mrs. Bond and I are always so glad to see how much you have grown and changed over the summer. It took a little while to get things up and running in Destiny (our circulation system)this year but we are ready and waiting to see you in the mornings or with your class. We are keeping up with usage on the look up stations this year. Look for the white sheet on the left of the keyboard and make a tally mark every time you use it. We appreciate that.

We will have a collection of new books for you that Mrs. Bond has been busy processing. Look for them on the new book cart. Several new titles have been added to our magazine collection too.

There are lots of new items coming into the Media Center this year including ELMO. It isn't the red, fuzzy Elmo we know and love but a document camera that does the same things an overhead projector does and much more. Watch for more information.

We will be looking and learning on the Cobb Virtual Library (CVL)on line. You can access all of the CVL resources from home, the public library or your favorite wireless hotspot. There are encyclopedia sources, news and current events, web searches through Destiny which are previewed by educators and a group called Special Topics. Home use is password protected so look for that information to be sent home next week.
